A VPN gets most of the attention in privacy setups, and for good reason — it's the layer that hides your IP address and encrypts your traffic from the network you're on. But the search bar sitting in every browser tab is its own tracking surface, entirely separate from the connection layer, and it's one a VPN alone does nothing about. Every query typed into a mainstream search engine is a small, timestamped confession of intent — what you're worried about, researching, shopping for, or trying to diagnose at 2 a.m. — and that data gets logged, linked to an identifier, and monetized independently of whatever's happening at the network level.

What none of them change is your IP address. A private search engine can promise not to log your query against your identity, but the request still arrives from your actual network connection unless something else is handling that layer — which is precisely the part a VPN covers. Combine the two and you get a query the search provider doesn't retain, arriving from a connection the search provider can't trace back to your home network either. Use only one, and you've closed half the gap.
What neither one hides
Clicking a result still sends your (possibly VPN-routed) connection to that destination site, which can run its own tracking regardless of how the search itself was handled — a private search engine controls the search, not what happens after you leave it. Browser fingerprinting is largely independent of both layers; a distinctive combination of installed extensions, fonts, and screen configuration can re-identify a browser across sessions even with a clean IP and a no-log search provider. And any account you're signed into during the session — email, a shopping account, a social platform open in another tab — can still tie activity back to you through that login, no matter what the network and search layers are doing underneath it.
A practical setup
Use a privacy-focused search engine as your default, not just for occasional sensitive queries — habit matters more than remembering to switch.
Pair it with a VPN for the network layer — the two solve different problems and neither substitutes for the other.
Sign out of unrelated accounts before research you'd rather not have linked to your identity.
Check your browser's fingerprint occasionally using a fingerprinting test site, since this layer isn't covered by either tool above.
Treat "private" as a specific, limited claim — private search means no query logging, not full anonymity across every layer of your session.
None of this is about achieving perfect anonymity, which is a much harder and more fragile goal than most setups actually need. It's about knowing which tool addresses which layer, so a search engine's privacy policy and a VPN's no-logs claim aren't quietly assumed to cover ground neither one actually does.
